Sleeping under stars means that you will sleep out in the desert in a private camp. It will be just the guide and you. We provide mattresses, pillows, blankets, and even a tent if you don’t want to sleep out in the open. Your guide will cook a Bedouin dinner over a hot wood-coal fire right before your eyes. We will provide you with enough water to brush your teeth and wash with, but there are no showers or toilets out in the middle of the desert.

We are Bedouin. We are born and raised in Wadi Rum desert. We grew up sleeping under the stars. In our opinion there is no place to sleep better than in the desert under the stars. We can imagine that leaving a safety of a bedroom or a tent to go and sleep under the stars is a big step for you. But it surly is one you should try. In this blog we will share five things you want to know about sleeping under the stars. It will help you to decide whether sleeping outside is an experience you desire.

#1 Get as close to traditional Bedouin life as you can

Most visitors come to Wadi Rum desert with two main desires. They want to see the stunningly beautiful landscape. And they want to learn and experience Bedouin life. Seeing the landscape is easy. Book one of the tour with a Rum village based company and you will see what you come for. If you want to experience true Bedouin life you have to choose your tour company carefully. Sleeping in a big camp with entertainment basically is a tourist version of Bedouin life. Even staying overnight in a small desert camp in the protected area is not the real deal. The most close you can get to Bedouin life is go on a hiking and scrambling tour or do a camel ride and stay overnight in a cave. Just like the Bedouin did in the past when they traveled around the area with their camels.

#2 Enjoy the beauty of nature and Bedouin traditions

Sleeping outside brings you as close to nature as possible. After sunset we drive to a cave. We put a mattress out for you to sit and relax. We start a fire for you to enjoy. We also use the fire to prepare you our famous sweet Bedouin tea. We use the same fire to prepare you a Bedouin dinner. After dinner we share stories about Bedouin life and culture with you. Sometimes we will play traditional Bedouin music for you. You can also enjoy the bright starry night sky. And the absolute silence of the desert night.

#3 Wake up by the light of the rising sun

In the early morning the light sound of birds in their morning chirp is the only thing breaking the desert silence. Slowly the intense darkness of the night starts to fade as the sun starts to rise. And then the most magical moment of the day: the moment that the sun rises above the horizon and casts it light on the sandstone mountains of Wadi Rum. The refreshed air slowly will be warmed by the rising sun. If you wake up in time you can find yourself a good place to enjoy this magic.

#4 Enjoy sleeping under the stars almost year round

Wadi Rum's desert climate is perfect to sleep outside. There is no early morning dew and temperatures are high enough almost year round. Only the real cold winter nights, rain and sand storms make sleeping under the stars impossible. This means that in spring, summer and autumn we can sleep outside almost every day. Only in winter there is a short period we need the shelter of a bivouac tent to protect us from either the cold, rain or snow.

#5 We take care of everything you need

We provide you with everything you need during your overnight stay. We cook you a Bedouin dinner and serve you a traditional Bedouin breakfast. We provide you water and tea to drink. And of course we bring the right sleeping gear. In summer this means a mattrass and sheets. In the cooler season we provide blankets or sleeping bags. And for the cold winter nights we bring bivouac tents. It is also possible to wear a Shemagh, our traditional headwear. This will make you feel more even like a Bedouin. Ask us for more information.

Sleeping in a desert cave under the stars truly is a one of a kind experience. We are convinced it will be the highlight of your visit to Wadi Rum. In our tours section you can find all our tours. All our overnights are ‘under the stars’.
